Hotel Helvetia

The rooms are dated, but ours was clean and comfortable, the hotel was quiet, and it was close to the train. Breakfast was basic but there was plenty, and every employee we met was friendly. I rarely write reviews, but recent ones had made me nervous about staying here, and that didn't match our experience. It's a good, affordable and convenient place if you don't need luxury. Giving a small business one star over expectations that weren't fair seems wrong, especially for people looking for a place to stay.

We only stayed one night in June 2025, and the location made it easy to see Zermatt. It's a few minutes from the station and close to everything. The room was small but clean, with the basics, and the staff were helpful. The breakfast buffet was a nice extra. There's no elevator, and the busy street can be noisy at night, but it worked well for a short stay and was good value.

The two real advantages were the central location and the generous space. We had a family suite with a big bathroom, living room and kitchen area. Breakfast was served in the Italian restaurant downstairs, but the morning coffee was a letdown for Italy. There was a note in the kitchen saying we had booked only the room and would need to pay another 100CHF to use the kitchen. The Wi-Fi didn't work because its seven-character password wasn't accepted by our modern phones, and the host never replied when I contacted them during our stay. After a week in Austria, the value felt poor: breakfast here was about half as much, for twice the money. It may have been the cheapest option in zermatt, but it was still far too expensive for what it offered.

We stayed on a Saturday and the noise from a bar or club in the building made it hard to sleep. It continued until 3 or 4 in the morning. Otherwise, it seems like good value. Our four-person room was clean and nice, with everything we needed, plus a lovely balcony overlooking the street. The location is very central. There's no reception, but check-in was smooth and the restaurant downstairs helped when we had questions.
