Hotel Scheuble

We brought friends along on this trip, and they loved Hotel Scheuble too. It’s right in the heart of the ‘Old Town’, about a 10 minute stroll from Zurich HBF. The staff are great, and the rooms are fabulous, with comfortable beds, powerful showers, and lots of breakfast options. This was our third stay, and we’ll be back.

I was travelling alone and wanted somewhere in the heart of the Old Town that didn’t break the bank. The hotel’s history appealed to me, and the lobby was much nicer than I expected. The staff were amazing, and they got me into my room several hours early. I liked having tea, coffee, and espresso in the room, and everything I wanted to see in the Old Town was an easy walk away. The only hard part was dragging my heavy suitcase over cobblestones and up hills from the train, but that would be the same anywhere. I’d definitely stay again.

The location is great, right by Niederdorf street, though it can get a bit noisy. The hotel and room were very clean, and the staff were helpful. We stayed in room 208, and my friend and I had a few problems. The Wi-Fi kept cutting out, though there was one better corner in the room. For the price we paid in 2025, it should work, and staff shouldn’t act surprised when asked about it. The bathroom ventilation didn’t work either. For at least one full day of our two-night stay, the TV had two spotty stations and only one that worked properly. Reception said nothing could be done because it was Saturday night, and offered no compensation. The worst issue for me was the bathroom design. As shown in the promo pictures, the sliding doors are partly clear glass and don’t close airtight. That means you can be seen, heard, and smelled while inside. It’s a deal breaker for me when travelling with someone. The place is clean, modern, and well located, but I won’t return because of the bathroom.

The staff were friendly, and the lobby, lounge, coffee bar, breakfast area, and fireplace were nice and cozy. My room experience, though, was unacceptably bad. I was there for work in January, and despite being told on the morning of arrival that late check-in was available 24/7, my colleague later got another call asking when we’d arrive. After check-in, I briefly got stuck in the elevator. My first room had a dirty sink and bed. The phone to reception didn’t work, so I went downstairs and was moved to the “last available room”. It was worse, with hair and stains in the sink and long dark hairs and greasy, oily marks on the sheet. They refused my request for basic cleaning. There were other problems too: a dusty kettle and coffee machine, cutlery that was dirty or extremely worn, a very hard bed with thin pillows, constant ventilation noise that couldn’t be switched off, a strange light that came on at night, and a freezing room. In the morning the bathroom floor was so cold I had to put on my winter boots. There were no slippers or bathrobe, and the towel was far too small. In daylight, I saw marks on the bathroom shelf that looked like makeup or possibly blood. Traffic noise was easy to hear in the morning. My colleagues stayed on other floors in rooms in the same price category and reported no problems, which makes the differences in room quality concerning. The rooms are outdated and, in my case, unacceptably dirty.
