Hostal Pukao

The porch was where we spent our evenings, feeling like part of this Polynesian family as they shared homemade food made from tropical plants. Chickens and cats wandered underfoot, and at night we could step outside to see the amazing Southern hemisphere sky, clear of city lights. Hostel Pukao feels rural, simple, and sincere, more like a family place than a commercial enterprise. We also rented a Suzuki-Jimmy at a reduced price, which let us explore the whole island. The garden is full of avocado, mango, lemon, guava, and banana trees, along with horses, cats, dogs, chickens, birds, and other welcome creatures. Maria made a different fresh juice from the garden fruit for breakfast each morning, and the breakfast was delicious. Her mango-filled donuts were especially good. There’s also a BBQ and a shared kitchen, so even if you stay longer, you can cook for yourself with local ingredients. My husband and I spent nine days at Hostal Pukao. It’s in a quiet area a little way from the city center, and Maria made it feel like a comfortable home. We became close friends during our stay and had a great time sharing the food she cooked. In the morning, you can find places in the city center selling fish caught that same morning. I also highly recommend buying fresh vegetables from the islanders' trucks, which are fresher than supermarket produce. Thank you, Maria 💕🥰

Breakfast was different each day, varied, delicious, and healthy, and the rooms were spotless, comfortable, and cozy. The owner looked after us, and we felt very comfortable. The place is wonderful, with parking inside the hostel if you rent a car, and the internet signal was good for me with Entel. It’s a little farther from the center, but it took us only 20 minutes to get there. I’d definitely come back.
