The rooms were fine, though not perfectly clean, and the range hood looked a little worrying. The neighborhood wasn’t great either. I’d suggest staying farther east. I travel a lot, and this was easily my worst check-in experience. I booked through Booking.com, but showing my passport wasn’t enough. They kept messaging me there to ask me to WhatsApp them my passport. Usually, hosts contact me on WhatsApp if they need something, but this time they wouldn’t send their number as a link, so I had to save it and message them first. They said they couldn’t contact me themselves. I was close to canceling, but the booking was non-refundable. I sent a passport photo, then right before arrival learned they only needed the numbers. That wasn’t explained in their message, and they said they couldn’t write the numbers down themselves. I also asked before arrival if a later checkout was possible because my flight was late. They responded with a lot of questions, then sent broken English that was hard to understand. My Spanish isn’t great, but I asked them to write in Spanish because it seemed like the manager was having trouble with the translator. They eventually told me in Spanish they weren’t a hotel, didn’t offer late checkout, and I should have booked an extra night. I couldn’t leave my luggage there either, since they weren’t a hotel. They said they were busy, short-staffed, and on holiday, and seemed to think my questions were strange. I understand that we couldn’t stay in the room longer or leave our bags, but the manager’s scattered manner really surprised me. I thought that would be the end of it, but the next day I got a Booking.com message saying they hoped I was happy and to contact them if I wanted to extend my stay. An hour later, another similar message said to contact them if I wanted to extend. So I asked if late checkout might be possible. Then came a flood of messages saying checkout was at 11:00, I’d already been told the day before, and I couldn’t stay later. They repeated that I couldn’t stay over and over. I was shocked. I asked why they’d sent those messages if I couldn’t extend, but got no answer, just more messages saying I couldn’t stay. I could understand if someone had sent an automated message to the wrong chat by mistake, but when I said that, she insisted she hadn’t made a mistake. The manager communicated terribly, didn’t speak English, and seemed unable to use a translator. I’ve never had a guest interaction like that. My questions were reasonable. Some aparthotels have luggage storage, and maybe there wouldn’t have been another guest after us, but apparently the manager didn’t see it that way. I deeply regret choosing this apartment. There are so many places to stay in Santiago, and I should have picked another one.
