The advertised soundproofing wasn't there, and when I raised that in writing, I got no response. Breakfast was very poor. They did make scrambled eggs, but seemed to give little thought to the quality of the food or coffee. Our room in the old house was tiny, unlike the picture, with no chair or table and no bathroom. The bathroom outside was very small, uncomfortable, and badly in need of descaling. For these prices, comparable to four-star hotels in Santiago, the service was extremely poor. I can't understand the good reviews after staying two nights. I'd save those nights and go to nearby Viña del Mar instead. I don't think Valparaiso warrants an overnight stay. If you really need to see it, 2-3 hours is enough.

I booked at the last minute and got excellent service. The room was very clean, and it's a good spot. Just be ready to walk up and down steep streets. Recommended.

There's only a partial city view, and the narrow street is steep. The place has lots of stairs, so you'll need to be willing to exercise and carry everything. It reminded me of old town Quito towards Pichincha.

My girlfriend and I were on a romantic trip, but eventually we were sent away because they said we were too loud. The service was inappropriate and unprofessional. We accidentally spilled wine on the bed, which was our fault, but the way we were treated the next day was awful. They charged us $95, and when we initially refused to pay, they threatened to call the police. My girlfriend was scared, so I paid. The place was very dirty when we arrived. Even looking at the wine glasses was disgusting, and the bed had yellow and grey stains. During a pandemic, a hotel failing to keep things hygienic is disgraceful. I want readers to stay away from Guest Hostel Escalera.
