I paid for a long stay, then was invited to visit a neighboring city. I asked the managers whether I could leave early, keep the unused days for when I came back, and pay extra then. Two shifts told me that was possible and that it was common practice around the world, including Colombia. When I returned, the same manager said I had lost those days. I was disgusted. I had no issue leaving after my paid stay, but they had assured me I could do this, and I felt deceived. The place also falls far short of a 4-star rating. I saw a cockroach, the walls smelled of cigarettes, and there was no window. The shower drained so slowly that water reached the bed. There are no blankets, just thin bedspreads, and no kettle in the rooms, with no way to get one. The kitchen gets terribly loud from 7 a.m., so going to bed early is best. There’s no bench outside, and guests have to sit on the floor to relax or smoke. I sneezed and coughed in the room but not outside. With no window or ventilation, the air conditioner is the only air source and should be cleaned and disinfected monthly. I doubt that was ever done. I asked about it and got no response. I had a headache during the last week of my stay and felt much better by the time I left. The only chair was wobbly and scary to sit on. I did like the staff, and the breakfasts were good.

The room was uncomfortable because the air conditioning barely worked, and water from the toilet was leaking through the floor. The towels were so worn that one started ripping further while I was using it normally. The staff also seemed unhappy and unwelcoming, which affected the stay. I was disappointed and wouldn’t recommend Hotel Asturias.

The friendly reception staff were a plus, although no one speaks English. I also liked the second floor sitting area and fish tank, and the hotel’s decor is amazing. The room was clean and had air conditioning, a TV, and a mini fridge. The bed cover had a stain, though, and the washroom’s shape was awkward. There’s no safe, and with only a ceiling light, the room gets so dark when you switch it off that you can’t see anything. Management should add a safe and a table light. Maybe they need to spend a night in the room to understand the experience. The daily free buffet breakfast was very good, though average compared with other hotels. The coffee was tasteless, so I had hot chocolate instead. The lead servant insisted on serving hot drinks himself and wouldn’t let me pour my own coffee. The Laureles neighborhood is one of Medellin’s safest, and food or drinks are easy to find within a 3-10 minute walk. Famous Mondongo restaurant is a straight 7-minute walk, Colombian or western coffee is 3-5 minutes away, and Unicentro Shopping Mall is 15 minutes on foot.
