I’ve spent a few years backpacking around Europe and stayed in plenty of seedy hostels. This one ranks among the worst. I have pretty low standards for hostels, and I absolutely don’t recommend this place. The room was in rough shape. The bedding was dirty, there was a damp, moldy smell around the hostel, and the room filled with cigarette smoke from the terrace when I opened its door. The door had no lock, the fans were the only cooling and ventilation, and the terrace door near the rooms shrieked so loudly that I’m surprised it didn’t wake everyone. People kept coming and going late. The bunk bed and ladder screws were loose, so they wobbled and felt dangerous. A broken metal plug stuck out of the outlet by the bed. The leather reception furniture was worn through, and there were three or four dead flies on the communal room beanbags. The TV looked like it had been covered and unplugged for years. I saw no signs of evening activities. There were roaches in the lockers and bathrooms, and bed bugs, or chinches. When I told the guy at reception, he got aggressive. I stayed calm and was just informing him, but he raised his voice and threatened to report me to the Tourism Police for saying that the usual response is to refund the customer and wash their clothes. Hospitality was poor too. Reception barely acknowledged me, with no tour, information, or smile. Someone who looked homeless was sleeping on the reception couch. I asked about it in a lighthearted way, and the receptionist grunted and went back to his computer. Wifi was bad, fluctuating between 0-3mbps, and my phone stalled even at 240p.

Breakfast was basic but decent, with fruit, bread, coffee, and eggs, though there was no milk. The shower was roomy and had reliable hot water, and the location felt safe. The staff weren’t especially friendly.

If you’re looking for somewhere cheap, purple monkey is a good option. It wasn’t a very social hostel, though, and I was often the only woman staying there. Most of the other guests were men in their 30s and 40s.

The stay was okay until people in the bunk next to mine started having sex in the middle of the night. I asked them to stop, but they didn’t, and I couldn’t find any staff around. When I mentioned it to the man at the desk the next morning, he brushed it off. That response was disgusting, and the behavior was unacceptable. It seems like a hookup hostel. If that’s what you want, god bless, but otherwise I’d suggest staying somewhere else.

We arrived with my boyfriend and were told they only had one bed available, even though we had booked two. We ended up sharing it for both nights. The mattresses were plastic and uncomfortable, the room fans were really loud, and there was a huge cockroach next to my bed. We left a cooked meal in the fridge overnight, but the kitchen staff threw it away. It had happened to other people too. After four days, another guest told us everyone had to leave because the hostel was missing some papers. Reception confirmed it when we asked and said we had to go within two hours. If we hadn’t asked, nobody would have told us. We had to book another hostel nearby, which cost more and was really annoying.
