For our Valentine’s trip, my wife and I booked the suite, but the shower never gave us hot water reliably. We had to run the kitchen sink to get the heater going, which wasn’t what I expected from a suite on a special occasion. La Posada del Zaguan is in a lovely town, but since El Retiro gets rain much of the year, it was surprising that the hotel had no umbrellas for guests. We got caught in the rain whenever we went out. A few umbrellas at reception would have made things much easier and shown more care for basic guest needs.
The place feels like a welcoming family home, with a lovely indoor patio, seating area, and fountain that put me at ease right away. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and thoughtfully equipped. The shower had plenty of hot water, and I could leave the window open for the cool air. There are several outlets, and while there’s no coffee maker in the room, fresh coffee is available all day in the sitting area, which I think is more sanitary. Breakfast is served at a restaurant across the street or parking lot, with very good choices and accommodating staff. Much nicer than the plastic-wrapped continental breakfasts I’m used to. The staff here, especially Mary and Estela, were amazing. Bring a sweater, scarf, or jacket for morning and evening walks. It gets chilly, though it feels great if you’re from somewhere hot like the southern US.
I picked this hotel in a bit of desperation because everything in la Llano Grande was booked for a flower festival, and I lucked out. It has old-world charm alongside modern renovations, and everything worked really well. The hot water was a refreshing change, and the place was very comfortable.
We had plenty of room for our two young children, and the posada is only a two-minute walk from the main plaza. It’s a lovely family-run place in the center of El Retiro, exceptionally clean and comfortable. The owners have kept its authentic feel while making the stay comfortable. Highly recommend!
The staff were friendly, especially at breakfast, and the rooms in this old colonial house were clean and traditionally decorated. But the noise made it hard to rest. I could hear staff in the mornings and loud music during the day, the bedroom’s wood floors were noisy too, and nearby construction started at 6 AM. I’d only suggest staying one night if you’re prepared to get little sleep. The doors didn’t feel secure, and there was no safety deposit box, which left me uneasy. The shower had no hot water, a surprise in such a cold city, especially at night. Internet kept cutting in and out as well. I was also charged for an old, hard hand towel that got dirty after something spilled inside my luggage. That felt unreasonable, and it’s a first for me on my travels. It’s just two blocks from El Retiro Park in Medellín, but I’d rate it two stars at most. Don’t expect much, and keep your stay to one night if you come to this part of town.
