The lake view was still amazing in the rain, and birds were all around. We were one of only three cars there, and found it much more charming than La Tortuga, which was mobbed with buses and parking attendants, or the German Bakery, with no view and no parking lot. The "100% birds" signs caught our eye and have become our favorite restaurant criterion. The owner was out feeding them at lunch, so they really were everywhere. This lovingly built and cared for lodge and restaurant has been owned by a German ex-pat for about 50 years. He was at the bar watching soccer. Apparently it used to be quite a destination, with a long history of tennis tournaments.

We were so happy with our stay. The rooms were simple but immaculate, with lovely views and nice prices. The hosts were great, and all the food was top level, although breakfast seemed a bit overpriced by comparison.

We stopped here for a quick bite on the way to Arenal volcano for our honeymoon, just a few days after getting married. The view and food were so good that we changed our last night's plans to stay among the beautiful gardens. The rooms are simple, but comfortable and have everything you need, all at an unbeatable price. The food was amazing and well priced, too. A good currywurst here will cost much less than another trip to Germany. We're already planning to return, and I'll book our room before we leave so we have no excuse to skip it.

The lake view from the little outdoor sitting area by my clean room was amazing. Nights were quiet, and the flowers were pretty. There was a fun, friendly pet dog, and plenty of birds on the property. They put fruit out for them, so it was fun to watch them come and eat. I had dinner here twice, and the German food was excellent both times. Breakfast was great, with a very generous serving of fresh fruit, but it doesn't start until 8am, so don't be in a rush. The rooms and bathrooms are very small. I think my shower had a drainage problem because it smelled of sulfur, so I kept the bathroom door shut. The shower head was one of those strange Costa Rican ones, and it was hard to get the temperature right.

Really fun birdwatching, with an epic view, and the best gulash in Costa Rica!!
