Service was the worst part of our three weeks in Costa Rica, and one of the worst hotel experiences we’ve had anywhere. Apart from a woman at reception and another working the breakfast live station, the staff seemed like they didn’t want to be there. Asking for a pool towel got us a look that said we were a burden. One man took fruit out during breakfast and ate it with his hands right in front of us, while another staff member stayed on her phone and ate milk and cornflakes behind the counter. They barely seemed to notice guests walking past. It felt completely unwelcoming, the opposite of hospitality. The location is fantastic, right in front of Playa negra beach, and there’s a nice pool and a gym. Breakfast was okay, with tasty pancakes and fresh fruit, but the rest was standard. The standard room was definitely overpriced and outdated. One mattress sagged unevenly, as if it hadn’t been replaced since the hotel opened, and there were spider webs in several spots if you looked closely. The shower was somewhere between a tap and a proper shower. It doesn’t feel like a four-star hotel at all.

The best thing about the place is how close it is to the National Park, and it’s right by the beach. The breakfast was quite good. There’s also a pool and gym, though we didn’t use either. It was fun seeing green and black poison dart frogs around the hotel, although it felt a little strange, almost as if they’d been put there. Our standard room was okay, but not worth what we paid. I’ve stayed in more comfortable three-star hotels. The beds creaked, and while there was both AC and a ceiling fan, I couldn’t tell whether they were working as well as they could. Mosquitoes were a real problem: I was bitten all over, and I think we killed about eight during our stay, with more still appearing. Decent place, just expensive.

The evening meal didn’t work for us because the music was so loud we had to shout to hear each other, so we decided not to eat there. We did have breakfast for two days, and there was a nice range of fruit, porridge, toast, and other things. Eggs were available if you asked, though it got busy and there was a wait.

The location worked well, with the beach right there, a few nice restaurants nearby, and the national park about a 15-minute walk away. The garden is lovely, full of frogs and other animals, and the pool was clean and nice. Breakfast had enough variety, and the WiFi worked really well. Our room was a bit small. We had a three-person room for two, and used the spare bed for our things. I’m not sure where I would have put my backpack if there had been three of us, perhaps by the door or on my bed. Still, Atlantida Lodge is a beautiful hotel.

The restaurant was good, breakfast had a great buffet, and the pool and gym were decent. The room, though, was nowhere near our standards or what we expected from a “4 star hotel.” The bedroom door wouldn’t close properly, so mosquitoes and other bugs could get in. My whole family woke up with new bites each morning. There was also a hole in the bathroom wall that let us see into the room next door, and they could see us. There was no TV. It’s close to the beach, but personally I’d avoid staying here again, unless I could get an upgraded room.
