The lodge sits in a lovely spot for nature and birdwatching, but some of the practical details made our stay difficult. Meals were uneven: breakfast was fine and included, while lunch could be a full three courses one day and just soup or salad with no protein the next. At $30 a meal, that was hard to make sense of. When meals are added after booking, the reservation desk may charge too much and struggle to explain the bill, even after you return. We were there in the dry season, yet it rained the whole time. Evenings fell to 50°F or below, and with no heating it got very cold. There may not be enough blankets for everyone, so ask for yours early. Staff speak only Spanish, unlike in other parts of Costa Rica we visited, so Google Translate is useful if you don't know Spanish. The road is another consideration. Coming from Arenal, Route 708 had far more potholes than Waze showed, and a flat tire on that remote stretch could make you think twice about leaving for day trips.

Bosque de Paz really does feel like a peaceful forest. We loved the staff and had a superb stay in the middle of tropical rainforest, closer to nature than anywhere else on our Costa Rica trip. A clear mountain stream runs by the hotel, and the setting is breathtaking. It felt more rustic and less haughty than the resorts, while Arenal, though beautiful and park-like, was much better for birding. Here, hummingbirds are a highlight, but it's not the strongest spot for birding overall. The homemade Costa Rican meals were delicious, served in three courses, and coffee is available all day. The staff were helpful and spoke enough English. The huge orchid garden was lovely even though the orchids weren't blooming when we visited. They can arrange airport pickups too. The winding, narrow roads on steep hills were a bit hairy for me at 70. Next time we'll get a driver. Rental cars cost about $100 a day, so being chauffeured seems nearly easier. We want to come back. It felt like a mini Shangri-la, a great place to get away from the rat race, especially for writers, photographers, and artists.

I wish we'd booked more than one night. It was one of the most peaceful places I've stayed, with a spacious room, comfortable bed, and plenty of hot water for a good shower. Mario greeted us when we arrived, arranged for our luggage to be taken to the room, and took our dinner order. Dinner was optional and cost extra, but it was delicious and well worth the price. Breakfast came with the stay and was just as amazing. Mario and his staff made sure everything went smoothly. The grounds feel like another world. There's an almost indescribable orchid garden, plus enchanting trails through the forest and along a river. Hummingbird feeders were constantly busy, as were a couple of other bird feeding stations. Between the location, food, fresh mountain air, clean cold drinking water, and the people, I can't say enough. I hope we can return soon and stay a few extra days.

We had great food and service, and the private trails were full of wildlife, with several waterfalls to visit. I believe the resort has 12 rooms. My only regret is that we didn't stay longer.

We came for the walks, and the trails at Bosque de Paz Reserve could keep you going all day. They're smooth and clearly cut, so non-technical hikers can manage them, and they lead to several beautiful waterfalls and cascades. If you like cool water, make time for a refreshing swim. We'd already had adventures at spectacular waterfalls and around the Poas Volcano. The property covers 1,000 acres in a beautiful part of CR that still feels undiscovered. I stayed with my 14-yr-old son and 16-yr-old nephew. Most other guests seemed to be birders and looked very happy there. The rooms are basic but comfortable, and we slept well. People respect the quiet. The food is simple, tasty, and authentic.
