The food was the real surprise for us. We’ve been traveling around Costa Rica, and the supper here was amazing, better than anything else we’ve eaten on the trip. The Shrimp Wok and crunchy tuna were so tasty. The people were all incredibly nice and went out of their way to help. Our room was clean and comfortable, nothing ritzy, and the separate building down the street felt cozy and secluded despite another guest’s complaint. The grounds were well kept, and the pools were a hit with our 9-year-old. Thanks for the stay!

We only spent one night in the BBQ Villa, but it was peaceful, very clean, and we’d come back for longer. The ocean view is amazing, especially from the eternal pool. Varina was a wonderful host, friendly and really capable. We had dinner there and breakfast the next morning, both excellent, and the outdoor restaurant is beautiful. We paid $161 USD, which felt reasonable for this quality, though it was just before the Christmas break rush. Such a nice, friendly place.

The Pacific view from this small place is incredible. It’s a 15-20 minute walk uphill from Montezuma proper, so it’s not especially convenient. We actually liked being away from the town’s bustle, though. For a quiet, quaint base while exploring the area, it’s hard to do better.

We came back in January 2023, four years after our first stay, expecting the same wonderful experience. Instead, on arrival we were told we’d be in an apartment down the road. The woman checking us in carried our bags with us down a hill, across a creek, up another hill, over someone else’s patio, onto a road, and finally to the apartment. It was a horrible welcome. The room was far below the quality of our previous one, remote and without hot water, and the electricity cut out whenever we plugged in the coffee maker. The website says the apartments have ocean views, but ours did not. I wouldn’t book if there’s a chance you’ll be assigned one of those apartments. We felt we’d been drawn in by the nice rooms and then switched to an inferior, hard-to-access place. On the positive side, the restaurant is now open for dinner, and the pool and grounds are still lovely. On our first visit, we stayed in Cabina 2 at Sollevante, a beautiful, secluded hotel above the Pacific with lovely grounds and an incredible infinity pool. The room was quiet and wonderful, with a terrace overlooking the grounds and ocean. The open-air shower among the coconut trees was a special treat. We heard howlers and geckos, and watched a particularly large iguana climbing around. The staff were fantastic, helping with our limited Spanish and making a tasty breakfast. I highly recommend Sollevante.

The family-run place has a relaxed, stylish feel, lots of palms and flowers, and a stunning sea view. We especially liked the deluxe sea view rooms and the great sushi. Charming hippy Montezuma is only a three-minute drive away.
