Miguel’s surf camp gives you a very different beach stay: Quepos's local beach instead of Manuel Antonio's tourist beach. The spot is beautiful, has plenty of personality, and the beach is pretty and far from crowded. There is a canal between Boca viejo and the beach strip, so factor that into your plans. Ferries run 24/7 and cost about 50 cents USD per person. The camp is a self-sustained beach resort.

Miguel and his wife take care of you, along with the 2-4 foreigners working there through work and travel. The vibe is great, and staying here is a nice way to support locals. It's a surf camp with some beds, so don't expect too much. The WiFi and power run on solar, which means when the sun goes down, you're down too. You'll need to drive along a dirt road to reach camp, but anything bigger than a sedan can manage it easily.

The place has a lot of potential, but my stay wasn't a positive experience. A special seaside location isn't enough on its own. When we arrived, Miguel’s wife greeted us with striking indifference. She didn't stand up or smile, and it felt as though we were bothering her by choosing to stay the night. She charged the same rate for everyone, including my 5-year-old son. That hadn't happened at any other campsite in Costa Rica, and it made the price feel excessive for what was offered. Miguel eventually showed up later in the day, but seemed more interested in catching waves than checking whether we were okay or needed anything. At dinner time, we found the internet was down. His wife said the connection needed resetting, but did nothing about it. Internet itself wasn't important to me, since I'd have chosen a hotel if comfort was what I wanted. It was her attitude that bothered me. They need to pay more attention to customers. A place with potential alone isn't enough.

We loved the vibe at this place, which seems perfect for surfers. We only stayed one night on our way south, but it was right on the beach. Finding it in the dark was tricky, and our car got stuck in the sand when we arrived. Luckily Miguel came to the rescue and got us out. There's an access road from the other side, so you don't have to drive through the sand. You can pitch a tent or book a private room. Our bed had a mosquito net, which was a big plus. The friendly dogs were lovely, though there were also plenty of sand fleas. In rainy season you may need to cross a river or take the ferry from Quepos. We were lucky in February and didn't encounter a river. Miguel really is the personification of

I only came for the surf lessons, so I can’t rate the room. Miquel was friendly and full of energy, and his teaching was good. The three of us girls all felt safe and comfortable there 🫶🏼
