Hostel Pangea

The upstairs restaurant and bar had an amazing view, plus cool hammocks to lounge in. The bartender was awesome and made sure we had a good time, though the rest of the staff didn't talk much. The hostel was really clean and amazing inside, and having a pool made the experience even better. Had a really good time!

We paid $7 for an 8 bed dorm, so our expectations weren't high. The location wasn't great unless you're looking for strip clubs, since there are lots nearby. The hostel looked like someone had cared about it once, maybe 10 years ago, but now it's a pretty derlicht place. Shower doors wouldn't close, the toilets were worn out, and the kitchen wasn't clean. I could've overlooked all that if the guy at reception hadn't been such an a-hole. It was the worst service we had in Costa Rica. He made us feel like we were bothering him, even though we were 3 out of 7 guests. When we asked about getting to the airport by bus, he said it would be 1000 colones and take an hour, but it was 685 and took 30 minutes. Clearly he was trying to push us toward the $45 shuttle. I've never felt more unwanted in a hostel. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this s**thole, unless strip clubs are your thing.

This hostel has no AIR CONDITIONING, and they wouldn't refund me after I realized it's September in Costa Rica and staying without adequate accommodations would be inhumane. For a place with such trendy newness, it's missing basic amenities for the local climate. Anyone living there would know guests would be extremely uncomfortable. This is a hack host who wants tourist dollars and doesn't care about guests. Avoid at all costs. The other reviews point to poor care, cleanliness, and lazy guest services. No wonder they seem to screw customers who notice the hostel's ill repute and seek better accommodations. They seem to think booking through Airbnb excuses them from doing the right thing.

The layout is like a maze, the rooms are in poor condition, and the windows are always open. The pool water looks disgusting, almost all the bed sheets are dirty, and there's just one bathroom, which offers some privacy but isn't great. You can hear nearly everything happening in the hostel, including couples having it out in another room. If you pay the minimum for one night, expect more people to show up in your room, and for girls and guys to be put together in the same bedroom. The food varied. I had breakfast twice, and one day it was awful while the other it was pretty decent. Staff were hit or miss. If you're lucky, they'll be nice and tell you the meal times. If not, they won't tell you, and arriving 5 minutes late means they won't serve you.
