Monteverde Coati & Sloth Studios Apartments

The road noise was a problem, especially at night, since the property is right beside a busy road. During my stay, the staff didn’t seem particularly friendly or welcoming, and the front desk was often unattended, so it was nearly impossible to get help or answers when I needed them. Monteverde also felt heavily over-touristed, with prices nearly double what I saw in La Fortuna. Given the other options, I’d recommend staying somewhere else. I wouldn’t choose this hotel or hostel again, or recommend it to others.

If you need a good night’s sleep, skip this place. It was extremely noisy day and night, the bed was uncomfortable, and the room smelled bad. We booked over Christmas break because other hotels had no rooms, and paid over $110, hoping it would at least be reasonably cozy. It was such a disappointment, especially when the regular rate is around $11 a night. The floors in the tiny shower were slippery, and the sink only had cold water.

Sleep was nearly impossible with traffic roaring past every half minute, and there were loads of insects at night, including cockroaches. The room had a strong moldy, musty smell as soon as we arrived. You have to buy or rent basics like towels and shampoo, and there isn't much of a shared space to meet other guests. Some staff were rude and unfriendly. Payment is cash only, and they didn't even give a basic receipt. I wouldn't stay here.

The street noise kept us from sleeping, and the huge and tiny cockroaches are hard to forget. The front desk staff were extremely rude. I can't think of anything positive to say. Staying here could ruin a beautiful Costa Rica vacation. I wish I could give it zero stars. Don't come.
