The dirt roads to beaches and other activities take 15 minutes or more, but you get used to them pretty quickly. That's part of the charm of this corner of CR. We were there for three nights over Christmas and my birthday, and the whole stay felt magical for our family, including our kids, ages 4 and 6. We spent lazy time at the pool watching howler monkeys in the trees above us. Lolo's thoughtful touches, from the bathroom amenities to sunscreen by the pool, showed how much care she puts into the place. Our girls also spent hours with the lodge's new mini-pig. I think Lolo accidentally hired a babysitter when she brought home that pet! What made it especially memorable was Lolo's hospitality. She made a special birthday dinner, gave us suggestions for things to do, and cooked lovely breakfasts. We arrived as guests and left feeling like friends of Lolo and her family. There's plenty to do nearby, and we can't wait to come back.

Waking up to howler monkeys just outside our room and hiking around the property were two of the best parts of our stay. We also drove to Avellanas and Tamarindo, about 20-30 minutes away. An SUV is a good idea for the dirt roads. At sunset on the beach, we happened to catch a turtle hatchling release, which was really special. We had three memorable nights at Mikado Lodge. The place is peaceful, the bedroom and pool views are lovely, and the rooms have everything you need and big, comfortable beds. Thanks to Lola for being such a great host and making us lovely breakfasts and dinner. We'd love to return soon.

We didn't have a car, so Lolo helped arrange rides to and from Mikado. We managed to take an Uber to Playa Avellana, but getting a ride back was difficult. There's also a short hike from the property, and we spotted monkeys while relaxing by the pool. We visited in early November at the end of the rainy season and had the whole resort to ourselves for a few days. It's lovely but laid-back, with rooms and bathrooms surrounded by nature. Lolo was a wonderful host, making us great breakfasts and a delicious three-course dinner we scheduled in advance. She also accommodated my travel partner's serious dietary restrictions. I'd happily return and recommend it to people visiting Costa Rica. It could also be a great place to rent out for a gathering.

After a packed week, we chose this place for the end of our trip, and it was the right call. The room was spotless and felt luxurious, and we had a beautiful view. Everything seemed well cared for. Forget shampoo, sunscreen, or a toothbrush? The resort has you covered. We had one dinner at the resort and another at a restaurant about an 8-minute drive away. Both were fantastic. It was such a relaxing getaway. The roads up are unpaved, so I'd suggest a 4-wheel-drive vehicle, though gravel roads are common in parts of Costa Rica. Don't let them put you off.

Lolo's warmth and care made us feel welcome from the start, and she went out of her way to make sure we had what we needed. Her breakfasts and dinner were wonderful and gave our stay a personal touch. Mikado Lodge was one of the highlights of our trip, and we'd recommend it wholeheartedly. We'd return in a heartbeat. The rooms feel private and are thoughtfully designed. Sitting on the veranda among the greenery was so relaxing, and we felt at home right away. We also spent peaceful hours by the beautiful pool. It's a special place to unwind and feel close to nature.
