Villas Macondo

I never stayed at the property, but the way they handled my cancellation request makes me not want to stay there. My reservation was still two months away when I had an accident and fractured my foot. I told them what happened and asked to cancel without a fee, but they refused. I even showed them that Hostelworld offered free cancellation until a later date, and they still wouldn't make an exception. The reservation was two months out, and this was a serious medical situation. That lack of flexibility says a lot about how they treat guests, in my view, and I'd spend my money elsewhere. They said most hotels would charge the full amount, but I don't buy that. Most hotels offer free cancellation for 2-3 days, and I had two months. I expect their response here will be about saving face. They can say they're sorry about my accident, but when the money is in their hands, that sympathy doesn't help. Their customer service felt like the worst I've ever experienced, and the whole thing came across as greedy. Think carefully before booking.

The rooms were comfortable, clean, and thoughtfully laid out, and the staff worked hard to make our stay enjoyable. Given the location, the hotel is very good value. A special thanks to Susan for making the visit so memorable.

For a family of six, Villas Macondo was an unbeatable budget option in Tamarindo. We had an amazing stay, and the staff were so friendly and accommodating that they even helped us get a lower price after I noticed the rate had dropped from what I booked on booking. The best part for us was the setting. There are lots of trees for shade, a tropical feel, and enough room by the pool to relax without feeling crowded. The hotel is quiet but just a one-minute walk from town, so restaurants, cafes, food courts, and supermarkets are right nearby. We could slip away from the busy streets and be back somewhere peaceful in seconds. There was wildlife too, including iguanas and howler monkeys, plus a playground for kids and pool toys. The kitchen was well equipped enough for cooking, though we didn't need to rely on it with so much close by. Our room was basic and not especially attractive, but it worked fine for sleeping. It was spacious, with a decently sized bathroom and a fridge and safe, though there wasn't storage, so we lived out of our suitcases. Different rooms have different setups, so that may not apply to all of them. The hotel could use some updating: the bathrooms need work, the beds could be more comfortable, one flat pillow per person wasn't enough, and our shower's water pressure kept fluctuating. There was a pretty big pool, and we liked having the fridge in the room. Costa Rica is tropical, so there are ants and bugs around, which hotels can't do much about.

Toto the cat came to visit us every day, which we especially loved. The receptionist was also really friendly and gave us great tips. The room was basic but comfortable, and the pool was nice and shaded, with hammocks to relax in. Everything is well located and close by. If you're a light sleeper, bring earplugs.
