We planned to stay three nights but left after one because the room was unbearably hot. Even with two fans, it was hotter inside than outdoors, so it really needs air conditioning. The website gave the impression there was a bar and restaurant, but there wasn't. Getting to town and the main road meant driving 15-20 minutes up and down a rough cart track. Our room was at the bottom of the garden, down more than 100 steps. I wouldn't return.

The included breakfast was tasty, with fresh ingredients from the spectacular garden the hosts have cultivated. The open-air common area and the care they've taken with the mountain's plants, wildlife, and views give this lovely B&B a peaceful feel. It's tucked into the lush jungle hills above Uvita. The private cabinas are comfy, the hosts are great, and the homemade food feels made with love. A hidden Bahia Ballena gem, and I wish my photos did it justice.

Peter and Marja gave us really helpful advice on where to go, from a wild, unspoilt beach to places to visit, restaurants, and farms. The lodge is secluded among a lovely garden of flowers and bushes, yet only a short drive, under five minutes, from the village. Our cabin had charming decor with a personal touch, and we had a very good rest during our four nights there. Don't miss the dinner Marja offers.

Cacatua Lodge was a delightful place to spend a few days with Peter & Marja, who were wonderfully hospitable. The garden had a lovely view and lots of birds. Our cottage was clean and nice, with its own terrace, fridge, and kettle. It's also a handy base for exploring the Uvita area, with the beach, town, supermarket, and restaurants all reachable within 10 minutes.

We stayed three years ago, in 2017, and I still think back fondly on this secluded place. The mountain view, the lovely couple, the well-arranged breakfast, and their cockatoo all made an impression. We were heading to El chirripo and said we'd send pictures if we made it to the top, but we never did. I'd definitely recommend staying here, and we'll come again, even though my husband is a Tico and we have other places to stay.
