Pension Barbakan

The bed was comfortable, with a warm fluffy comforter and softer pillows, and breakfast was great. Our double room had decent space, a private bathroom, a safe, and a small TV. The price was good for the location. There’s no lift, and check-in is at the Hotel Garni side, marked by a picture outside. The receptionist was very friendly; for arrivals after 6pm, they can leave the keys in a lockbox. You get one key for the main door and another for your room. Water pressure was good, though the hot water sometimes paused, and street noise came through at night. A good choice for a short stay.

I wouldn't recommend this place. The beer I had was overpriced, and the server was very unfriendly. She moved my personal things, told me to put my chair back where I had found it even though five of us were sharing a table for four, and was disrespectful when bringing our order.

There are fantastic pensions nearby, and I ended up staying at one just a minute away, where the host was much more courteous. At this place, the staff member seemed annoyed when I rang the bell to ask about availability. She started closing the door and said “no” before I’d even finished my question. That was the service I got at the door, so I’d stay away.

The hosts were kind, and the stay was comfortable in a great location. Our room faced the street, though, so we could hear the bar late into the night. I’d try for a room that doesn’t face the street.
