Wellness Hotel Subterra

The location made it easy to get around: Karlovy Vary, Ostrov, Jachymov, and Bozi Dar were all just a short drive away, with parking right beside the hotel. The staff were kind, the food was excellent, and the rooms were clean. It was good value and a pleasant stay. The interior has an eclectic style that may catch you off guard at first. Even in cold weather, the rooms and wellness area were comfortably warm. The wellness facilities were convenient too, with a properly heated sauna, hot whirlpool, and plenty of free towels and sheets.

The food was good, though a little pricey, with a dinner main course costing 12€. It seemed clearly geared toward German customers. The rooms were clean but a bit old, and things were generally okay.

This place is mainly suited to people coming for skiing. It has free open parking on the premises, and the breakfast was decent, though the choices were limited. There’s a small underground spa and sauna area that’s good quality, and a full day cost around €6. The restaurant serves Czech food, which was okay to good, and they accept VISA credit cards. I stayed here a couple of years ago. It’s in a very small town, just down from the mountains, with few activities or places nearby. Eating options are very limited, and there’s nowhere to get food at night. Language was a major problem for me: if you don’t speak Czech or German, be prepared, because no one understands English.

The two bathrooms in our apartment had been nicely renovated, but the place felt disorganized and there wasn’t a comfortable chair to relax in. Breakfast was a joke: the coffee machine was broken, the vegetables weren’t fresh, and there wasn’t enough food. A decent egg, cheese, and warm bread would have been simple, but that wasn’t what we got. We also had to argue with the waiter to get seated at the table that suited us. Apparently you can’t just sit wherever you want. We stayed at Subterra over Easter 2022, after deciding at the last minute to take a short break in CZ. Check-in dragged on while we waited for the receptionist to greet us, then filled out a very detailed form and had every detail checked. It felt like a school exam. Check-out at 10 am was also a surprise, especially with check-in at 4 pm. For what we paid, it wasn’t worth it. The hotel is described as a spa hotel, but sauna and whirlpool access cost extra. The money we spent didn’t match what we got. Never again.
