Berg Hotel

The location is lovely, right by the lake and at the start of the Blue walking route. The rooms were very clean, but ours on the third floor felt cramped, especially the bathroom. Its door only opened about two thirds of the way. The shower was so tight you could barely turn around, and the bed’s two mattresses kept separating during the night. The welcome stood out because the receptionist was very helpful. They also work at breakfast and dinner. Wellness was good, with four different saunas, though the hot tub and pool are small and would feel tight with more than four people in either. We couldn’t find a massage slot because everything was booked, and we hadn’t reserved before arriving. I can’t comment on the massages themselves. During our stay there was only a fixed dinner menu with little choice, including just one meat option, so we ate elsewhere. Breakfast had small portions of each item, so we had to ask for more every day. For example, there was only one slice of cheese and not much bread. Staff also took items from the buffet for themselves, which may have contributed to the shortage. The coffee machine needed repair each day. Those are the reasons I rated it three stars. My first review was just a general overview, but after the response I thought it was fair to explain the specifics. Based on other hotels I’ve stayed in, which you can see here and on booking.con, I think a rating of three is more than fair. After that response, though, I won’t be coming back.

Dinner at the restaurant was good, and the waiter was very helpful. When the receptionist couldn’t speak English, she asked him to translate, and he helped us sort out our problems. At least one receptionist didn’t speak English, which seems ridiculous for a four star hotel. Reception staff were often absent, and we had to call for help. Our double room had no windows, only a balcony door. The listing mostly showed another room, so we hadn’t expected this. It felt gloomy and stuffy, and using the very old air conditioner cost extra. Breakfast was modest, though they did offer Prosecco, and the coffee was poor. We left a day earlier than planned.

We spent a weekend here for a wellness break. The place was very clean, the wellness was good, and both dinner and breakfast were high quality. Forests nearby made for nice walks by the lake. I’d recommend it for a weekend getaway.

The food was great and the service was good. It was one of only a few restaurants open in November, and probably one of the best on the south bank of Máchovo jezero.
