Grand Hotel

The room was moderately clean, though there were lots of long hairs on my pillowcase, which had probably been washed thoroughly. It was so hot I couldn't sleep, so I ended up in my car in the hotel car park with the windows open. The Trebic church bell rang every 15 minutes, which came in handy when I woke up in the boot wondering the time and didn't need to reach for the ignition key. That's not the hotel's fault, but it set the mood. Breakfast was adequate, and the coffee wasn't bad. Within ten minutes of arriving, the canteen staff asked me to leave the veranda facing the town square because I was eating ice cream. I'd bought it at the hotel's ice cream stand beside the restaurant. The veranda was empty, but apparently it was hotel policy, so I went to sit on a bench in the square with no shade. If you've never stayed in a hotel before, this place might introduce you to how they used to be.

The rooms are fairly basic and the decor feels dated, so don't expect modern styling or five-star rooms. Still, there's a pool, bar, restaurant, breakfast service, and a bowling lane you can hire by the hour. Off-street parking is available, but only a few spots are secure behind a barrier. The windows open fully for fresh air, though there's no air conditioning. Staff were friendly and service was good. Overall, it was good value.

The location is great, but bring earplugs: the church bell rings every quarter, even overnight. The whole hotel was overheated, and the pool water looked cloudy. Food was okay apart from the breakfast sausages, whose grey color really put us off. One receptionist seemed really annoyed, while the other was friendly.

The restaurant was badly understaffed, and I waited an hour and a half even though only four other tables were occupied. When the food finally arrived, there was a hair in the dish. The atmosphere and decor were at least somewhat nice. Two stars.
