Hotel Fronfeste

The shower drain was a bit annoying, but the staff brought me extra towels to dry the bathroom, and I still had a wonderful stay. The continental breakfast was nice, with lots of fresh food. This is probably the best hotel in Amberg. It’s one of the strangest hotels I’ve ever stayed in, an old prison completely renovated as a bed and breakfast. There are several kinds of rooms. Many were made from former cells, so they’re small and suited to one or two people. Mine was much bigger, the prison director’s room, and simply stunning. My room was wonderful, and the place is amazing, with lots of rooms to explore and photograph. The friendly, kind staff wear police uniforms to keep up the prison theme.

We only stayed one night, so I can’t really say what the hotel is like overall. The town is a nice place to visit for a night, and there’s a car park very close to the hotel, though the hotel itself has no parking. Our room had a bed surrounded by steel bars, with steep steps up to it. I know it’s an old prison, but anyone with mobility issues is likely to have a problem.

The prison suite was spacious and clean, and the staff were friendly. The smaller breakfast buffet is optional and costs extra, but it had a perfect variety. You can walk to everything in old town Amberg, and there’s a convenient parking garage behind the hotel. A parking pass for the length of your stay costs 10 euro. We’ll be sure to stay here again when we visit Amberg.

The breakfast costs an extra 9EUR per person, but it’s worth it and has plenty to choose from. Rooms are small since they used to be jail cells, but they’re arranged well to make the most of the space. They’re clean and modern, the beds are comfortable, and the WiFi works well.
