Hotel Herzog Heinrich

The food safety issue was the worst part of our stay. I had called ahead and spoken to reception and the cook when we arrived, and I also wrote my gluten-free needs on the daily menu card. Even so, the staff seemed poorly informed about gluten-free food and cross-contamination. I became violently ill after breakfast. I asked reception to let management know, send housekeeping, and bring water. Housekeeping was great, but the water never came, so my husband went to REWE for drinks. I asked twice to hear from management or the owners and got no response. That says plenty. This was meant to be a birthday and wedding anniversary trip, but that didn't seem to matter to anyone. I was told gluten-free food would cost an extra 3€, something I have never encountered in all my travels. Since I ate less than a regular guest, that felt close to discrimination against someone with celiac disease. The rest of the hotel was disappointing too. The beds are extremely hard, the dining room is noisy like a train station, and getting around is confusing without a clear map. The pool areas are tiny for a hotel this size, and the rooms are so far from everything that it feels like a rat maze. There was no shampoo, just a tiny soap dispenser. I couldn't use the sauna, and apparently it doesn't open until 12:00 at a wellness hotel. The dog hall smelled strongly of dogs, which was a first for me even at a place that allows them. Checkout is at 10:00. It felt like they cut corners everywhere. Never again.
