Saxonia Wohlfühlhotel

The breakfast was delicious, with nearly everything I could have wanted. I booked at short notice for one night and was pleasantly surprised by this charming family-run place. Since I was using crutches, the owners kindly offered me a first-floor room so I wouldn’t need to tackle extra stairs. It was quiet and suited my one-night stay well. The hotel sits just outside the town center, around a five-minute walk away, and there’s a large parking lot nearby for €1 a day. I’d consider staying here again if I return to Bad Kissingen.

The breakfast was a big reason we chose this hotel, but it disappointed us. There were plenty of side dishes, fruit, and cereals for this kind of hotel, though the choice didn’t match a modern three-star place. The flaxseed seemed to have been sitting out for some time. The rolls were the worst part: cheap prebaked ones that were only edible straight from the oven, provided they weren’t overdone. They felt completely out of place. For the room price, even in a spa town, we expected better, and left disappointed. There were some real positives. The location is excellent, and nearby public parking costs just €1 a day, with free parking on holidays and weekends. Reception was friendly, and Ms. Engels was always keen to make guests comfortable and helped us with our reservation. Our room looked onto the garden, so we could leave the window open at night as we usually do. The bed creaked whenever we moved, though, and the floors seemed to creak with every step throughout the building. We could hear each footfall on the many stairs. The hotel feels old and in need of maintenance, with dated furnishings and decorations. If you enjoy a museum-like, old-fashioned interior full of pictures, knick-knacks, and mostly plastic flowers, you may like it. We couldn’t share all the positive experiences others have had, especially about breakfast.

The hosts deserve my compliments, and I’m already looking forward to another visit. We had a large bedroom with excellent beds, and the garden was beautifully tended. Breakfast had plenty of variety, too. This is a lovely old house, filled with antique furniture, lots of pictures and artwork, and the occasional touch of kitsch. If you’re only looking for somewhere plain to sleep, it may not be your style.

The spa gardens in the center are only a few minutes away on foot, and there’s a lovely garden behind the house where we enjoyed a quiet coffee. We spent a weekend in this unusual old villa, furnished with real care, and felt completely at home. The hostesses were consistently warm and helpful. Our room was spotless, the bed comfortable, and there were thoughtful things on hand, from a fridge and kettle to cotton pads and an umbrella. Breakfast was tasty and had a broad selection. We’d happily return.
