The quiet, green surroundings reminded us a little of Austria, though we'd never been to this part of Germany before. Inside, the old-fashioned style feels cosy, with wooden panels throughout the bar and restaurant. The coffee was good, and after a long trip the tasty food was very welcome. The staff were so friendly and helpful, and speaking English was no problem.

The hosts made us feel almost like family from the moment we arrived, and we’ll definitely return. We spent nine days here over Christmas and, true to the name, it was the most relaxed I’ve ever felt on a holiday. The house is in good shape, with rooms that seem to have been renovated and decorated fairly recently. Breakfast was generous, and there was good food available in the evening too. Its central spot in the Bavarian Forest made it easy to find things to explore in every direction.

We came with our teenagers to visit the toboggan run in St. Englbar, and the house’s morning views were lovely. The nearby church bells take a little getting used to, but then you can sleep really well. Our room had a comfortable box-spring bed, a good shower, a sofa and a large TV. It’s been renovated almost throughout, with quality and German flair, and the rooms feel current. The kitchen fixtures and chairs seemed solid, not IKEA faucets or wobbly chairs. The hosts are very friendly and hospitable, and breakfast was delicious. It could work well for a hiking break or as a stop on the way to the Czech Republic, Austria or Slovakia. We’d say it’s worth making a detour for.
