We'd gladly stay at the Forsthaus again. It's the most central place to stay in Schmilka, and the beer garden is right outside, though it closes at 8 p.m. so it doesn't disturb you late at night. The sauna, called the “bathhouse,” is in the annex above the beer garden and opens daily from 2 to 8 p.m. We booked apartment no. 6 on the second floor after speaking with reception. It worked well for four people, with two bedrooms, two single beds and one double, a living room with a fully equipped kitchen, and a fairly small bathroom. The balcony's hanging swings were a big hit. Even in August, the attic didn't get too warm, thanks to the shaded windows and a steady light breeze from the mountain. The shower in our private bathroom didn't work properly. Cold water came through, but the hot water only trickled, so after hiking we used the bathhouse showers every day. They have fresh towels, a rain shower, two regular showers, two cold showers, and two foot baths, so that worked out fine. With four people hiking daily, though, we often needed to air, wash, and hang clothes. There were only three hangers in the whole apartment and no clothes rack, so we had to use the windows, chairs, and curtain rods. I mentioned that at checkout.

We'd asked for a quiet spot when booking apartment 1 because we were traveling with a baby. Instead, there was noise right outside the window until 10 p.m., with the Mühlenhof next door, then the day's preparations started there at 6 a.m. Doors slammed and people smoked right by the window. The room wasn't worth the price, and the bathroom had a very musty smell.

The bathroom in apartment 7 at the Forsthaus is tiny. There isn't much room to move for tall, broad men or for people who are a bit overweight. The shower barely runs, so it's hardly usable. Reception said they know about the problem and that it's just an old building. Had we known, we wouldn't have booked it.

We loved the whole idea behind this place, its charm, the friendly people, the wonderful atmosphere, and the sensational breakfast. It was simply wonderful. Somehow you can leave your worries and stress behind and slip straight into holiday mode. Thank you, we had such a great time!

It's a beautiful area and a nice concept, no doubt. But for the room price, I expected it to be cleaner. When we arrived, there were quite a few cobwebs in the corners.
