We checked with the owner and were allowed to bring a birthday cake. When I asked about plates and forks, he replied, "not usually," then coldly and rudely added, "just this once." That summed up the experience for me. The birthday party at the farm in Balve was a complete disappointment, and I can’t recommend the place for children’s parties. The host was distant and unfriendly, with no proper welcome, no questions about whose birthday it was, and no explanation of the schedule. Birthday wishes weren’t part of it either. There was very little engagement, and we were left to guide the children around and keep them entertained ourselves. Apart from grooming two ponies and taking turns riding them, there was no organised activity or farm tour. The farmer who accompanied the pony rides was friendly and helpful, at least. The food was okay, but the overall atmosphere felt impersonal, and our guests weren’t very happy either. We’re sorry we made the extra trip. We’ve had much better farm birthday parties elsewhere. The place could have potential if someone friendlier were involved, but it seemed clear that this isn’t the owner’s passion. I’m sharing this so others know what to expect and can perhaps go with lower expectations.

Everything we tried was homemade, and we left full and happy. The cakes were amazing, and the leek soup was fantastic. We also loved the sandwiches with homemade sausage and the beetroot salad that came with them. I liked that salad so much I emailed Mrs. Buchgeister for the recipe. She kindly found time to send me the ingredients, and it’s been a regular part of our meals ever since. On our last visit she came to the table, so we could thank her in person. We found the "Schultenhof" farm by chance while travelling from Attendorn through the lovely countryside near Balve. There are lots of animals, and the café leaves little to be desired. It’s also possible to stay overnight, though we can only speak for the restaurant. The young waiter was friendly and attentive. They serve both pork and wild boar currywurst, and we bought some green eggs too. You can really taste the difference from supermarket eggs, and it’s good to know the hens can roam freely outdoors. There’s also a vending machine with various products. It’s quite a drive from Attendorn, but we always enjoy coming back. Next time we’ll try the breakfast buffet, which is offered at certain times. A restaurant where you leave satisfied, not disappointed. Many thanks to the owner and staff!

There are lots of animals to watch and pet, plus a playground, and you can stay in holiday apartments or rooms with breakfast and half board. It seems like a great choice for a farm holiday with little ones. We ate at the restaurant today and the food was delicious. When the weather’s nice, you can sit out on the terrace too. The farm is fairly clean and well organised.

The fries and cakes were great, but the prices really need a rethink. We stopped here for a break while hiking today, and it’s got very expensive for what you get. €5 for a latte macchiato, €6 for oat milk, then another €0.80 for syrup feels completely overpriced. Thanks.
