The rubbish outside was hard to miss. Yellow recycling bags kept piling up in front of the house, and it was the only place on the street with a heap that seemed to grow the whole time. The kitchen windows look straight onto it, so I imagine the smell could get awful in summer. A small wooden shelter for the bags would help. We emailed the landlord and plan to send a copy to the tourism board so they know about it. We also took photos of the problems, and hope the landlord addresses them so future holidaymakers can feel comfortable. Having to pay for the apartment as soon as we arrived also struck us as unusual. We were there as a family with our dog from November 2nd to 9th, 2025, in the "Alte Stadtmauer" (Old City Wall) holiday apartment in Bamberg. Inside, the carpet on the fifth stair was loose, and we kept tripping over it. A nail sticking out of the baseboard was another real injury risk. I found a dirty pillow and fitted sheet in the closet in my bedroom, and didn’t feel the closet was hygienic enough to hang my trousers in. Fortunately, I’d brought my own pillow. At checkout we were told to strip the beds and leave everything upstairs by the washing machine. In 30 years of staying in holiday apartments around Germany, we’ve never had to do that before. It seems like something the cleaning staff should handle. With these issues, we can’t recommend the apartment.

The host was friendly, and the location is central but still quiet. The apartment has enough furnishings. Its two floors may make it unsuitable for people with disabilities, and the kitchen layout doesn’t make it an easy place to gather comfortably. In summer, the covered courtyard could work as a living room.

The welcome was very friendly, and we got a useful introduction to Bamberg. The bedroom and bathroom were very good, and the bedrooms have modern furnishings. The kitchen is quite old-fashioned but usable, though it could do with more equipment: we were missing a proper casserole dish and a broom. The TV keyboards didn’t work properly either. There’s no common room, so a more comfortable seating area would be nice. The holiday apartment itself is lovely and in a great location.

We stayed for a long weekend and had the lower apartment, which I think is the smaller of the two. The owner greeted us warmly, showed us around, and shared lots about Bamberg. There’s an information panel in the stairwell with details about the building. The apartment includes parts of the historic city wall and two original medieval staircases, which give it a special charm. Despite being so central, it was remarkably quiet, almost like the countryside. We could leave the windows open at night, and the fly screens kept mosquitoes out. In the courtyard there’s a little garden with covered seating spots and some charming details. A door connects it to the garage, which you can rent if you have a car. The apartment is traditionally furnished, with three single beds. Apparently two couldn’t be placed together because of the space. It has a sink, shower and toilet, plus a medium-sized kitchen and a large dining table. There’s also a kettle, coffee maker, TV, radio, Wi-Fi, wardrobes and a coat rack. We felt at home there, and the landlord was friendly and welcoming.

The central location was the best part. In May 2023 there was a huge construction site right across the street, and it looked like it would be there for several more months. The apartment badly needs renovation. The duvet and bed linen are all plastic. The pictures say it all.
