I’d known "Den Echten" as a good restaurant since the 1960s. Now I’ve rediscovered "Zum Echten" as a guesthouse with what a traveler needs: good rooms with bathrooms and breakfast made to order. It’s centrally located, but the soundproof windows keep the noise out, so it’s quiet at night. The prices are low, too. All in all, it’s well worth it.

The host was genuinely friendly and helpful, but the bad memories outweigh the good ones for me. The guesthouse is on a very busy road and feels quite run-down. Our room was only moderately clean. The beds were arranged so awkwardly that getting to the window meant navigating an obstacle course, the pillow was lumpy, and the bedside lamp switch was hard to use. Breakfast disappointed too: the ham on the cheese and cold cuts platter was already wilting, my egg was still three-quarters raw, and the rolls were rubbery.
