You can be right in central Berlin, between a kebab stand and a permanent building site, then step through and find a restored Wilhelminian-era complex that feels like another world. Eighteen apartment buildings sit around a park-like courtyard, as if it were still possible to live somewhere beautiful in Berlin. The paneling has more class than any fancy new building, and the façades look ready for a TV drama. The people living here have money. The rest of us can take it in, dream for a bit, then head back to the real Berlin, where beauty often shows up only on a billboard.

The usually lesser-known Riehmer Hofgarten can catch you completely off guard the first time you walk through its gates. It feels like you’ve suddenly arrived in Paris. The deserted scene, especially in winter, seems to belong to another era, a striking change from the surrounding Kreuzberg neighborhood.

I had no idea what was waiting behind the gate. From the outside it looked like an ordinary backyard, but inside was something like a fairy tale: a park, lovely houses with little shops, a church, and more. It’s incredibly peaceful, hard to believe you’re in a big city like Berlin. The park is being redesigned too, and the description says it’ll be a real eye-catcher, with lighting, playgrounds, and more. Walking through that gate into a whole different world was an incredible experience. Go see it.
