Breakfast and the Ibis check-in staff were good, but almost everything else at Ibis Styles Berlin Mitte was terrible. The filthy front windows looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in over six months, and room cleaning was nonexistent. Our stained carpet, dirty curtains that didn’t cover the windows fully, wonky TV, and broken lights made the room feel badly maintained. I reported the lights on our first morning, but they stayed broken for the rest of our stay. The shower and basin were in the middle of the room, the shower was tiny, and its door wouldn’t open all the way. The hair dryer cover came off in my hand, exposing bare wires, and the room’s electrics felt dangerous. This place doesn’t meet the standards of a Formule 1, never mind a 3.5-star Ibis Styles. I’ve stayed at lots of Ibis hotels in Europe, and this one falls short of both Ibis and Ibis Styles standards. It’s dirty and poorly run.

The location is the hotel’s main advantage. There’s also free coffee in the lobby from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM, which is a nice touch, but it didn’t make up for what was missing from the room. Apart from the bed, shower, and toilet, there was very little provided. No slippers, water, cotton pads, or toothbrush, and disposable slippers cost €6 at reception. Our key cards were blocked two or three times, so we had to go back to reception to get them reactivated and were locked out in the meantime. My wife and I felt the room facilities and comfort didn’t justify the price. There’s very little added value here beyond the location, and service and amenities need improvement.

Berlin was our first trip, and the hotel’s location made it a great base. We could walk to the main sights and shopping area, with bus, tram, and train stops close by, plus lots of cafes and restaurants nearby. The room was basic and a bit small, with an unusual arrangement for the toilet, shower, and basin. There wasn’t a tea or coffee station, unlike most Ibis style hotel rooms.

We found it convenient to have shops all around the hotel for food, drinks, or other things throughout the day. The U bahn, tram, and bus stops are all nearby, too. We stayed four nights and liked our room, though it was small for two. The open bathroom setup was uncomfortable, with no sound insulation, so we couldn’t use all the facilities at once. There wasn’t room for our luggage, which made getting around harder. The room was clean, with a nice view, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Free afternoon coffee was a nice extra.

We stayed six nights this time, and as a platinum member I expected welcome amenities but didn’t receive any. They said those were only offered in higher Accor categories, although I’ve often received them at Ibis hotels, including a birthday party at a Parisian Ibis Hotel. The breakfast has slipped a bit, and croissants, which used to be available, seem rarer now. Cleaning can be confusing, though the cleaners are friendly, and the bathrooms have a smell I could do without. I also found the emphasis on giving room numbers for breakfast a bit stressful. I understand why they ask, but they could be subtler. The staff were incredible on my first visit, especially a wonderful Brazilian lady who knew everything about using points, and this time felt a bit worse. We love staying at Ibis Styles Berlin Mitte, and it’s our fourth or fifth time here. It’s well located for walking to attractions or using public transport, and the open coffee machine is available from noon to 10pm. I was a little disappointed this visit, but I like the hotel so much I’ll probably come back.
