Jugendherberge Berlin-International - Hostel

The facilities were ultra clean, the breakfast was awesome, and my room had a nice shower plus a separate toilet, better than in most hotels. You make your own bed, as you do in hostels. The staff spoke fluent English and were brilliant and professional, even with 200 young teenagers staying there. I booked through Booking.com, but the listing was misleading and the quoted total was false, with extras added to the final bill. I was going to cancel and move elsewhere, but the bigger issue was that it didn't spell out clearly that this was a YOUTH HOSTEL. How difficult is that to make clear in the particulars? I'm never using Booking.com again.

The staff deserve a special mention. They were incredibly friendly and helpful at all hours, even in the middle of the night, and kindly got me hot water for my thermos. I was in Berlin for a program by The Art of Living at the JW Marriott, and this hostel made it possible to stay comfortably and affordably for the whole program. It was extremely affordable, hygienic, and super central. For €40 I got a private room with my own bathroom, a clean comfortable bed, linen included, and a pretty good breakfast. They also offer the handy option of packing your own lunch for €6.50. I had a wonderful stay at DJH Jugendherberge Berlin International. Highly recommended if you're after a clean, affordable, welcoming place to stay in Berlin!

The evening staff were really friendly and helpful, and this place is among the top three of the seven I've tried. The rooms are okay, a bit old, but I only need a bed to be happy. It's close to transport, and I'd definitely stay here again if I return to Berlin.

The hostel itself was good, and I liked the room and breakfast. But an incident at reception left me feeling humiliated. When I returned to check in, a younger man was serving people ahead of me warmly while they spoke German. His manner changed when I spoke English, and he was cold and rude several times. I'd left my belongings and my friend's in baggage room number 3 earlier, after a very pleasant welcome from the first receptionist. Once checked in, I asked for the key to room 3, but was given the key to room 2. When I pointed out the mistake, he handed me the right key and said, loudly in front of everyone, that if anything was missing, he'd assume I'd stolen it. It felt practically xenophobic to be called a thief like that. I hope the hostel takes steps so nobody else has to experience this.
