I booked this unusual hotel for a business trip and was quite surprised to see nuns at reception. The rooms are clean and welcoming, with no unnecessary frills. It’s a good spot if you want peace and quiet. There is some proselytizing, but it’s very discreet: crucifixes and icons in the hallways, and just a few brochures in the rooms.

I picked up some delicious jams at the monastery market in Walkenried, simply heavenly 😉. The combinations were unusual, but the jams tasted really good.

The surroundings are beautiful and peaceful, breakfast was generous, the bathroom was lovely and clean, and the nurses were very friendly. But for the price, the beds in the double room at the House of Encounters were really disappointing. One bed was smaller, with a very thin mattress and a board in the middle of the slatted frame, presumably to stop it sagging. It made the bed exceptionally hard. There was only one nightlight, and it felt like a single room with an extra bed. They offered another room, but it had the same setup.

I was there from Friday until midday Sunday for a hospice lecture, and it felt more relaxed over the weekend. Many thanks to Sister Jutith for arranging things for us. I’d be happy to come again.

The view was amazing, and the food and breakfast were delicious. The church/chapel inside was huge and beautiful. Our room was spacious enough, and the bathroom was perfect. Just watch out on the bunk bed, and don’t spread out too much or you could fall out.
