The rooms were clean, breakfast was an ordinary continental spread, not bad but not the best I've seen, and the breakfast staff were pleasant. The hotel is about a mile and a half from the cathedral, within walking distance of all the Christmas markets. Our check-in was another story. The man at the desk wasn't pleasant, and after 5 pm on Sunday our key cards stopped working. We waited in the inside doorway for nearly 30 minutes until the manager drove across town to let us in. When I said the delay was unacceptable, he snapped that he'd had to drive across town, and blamed a computer glitch. I suspect the cards hadn't been programmed properly at check-in. His rudeness put me off returning. It was 6 pm on Sunday and nobody was managing the front desk, which seemed odd.

Pretty average place. Aside from check-in, the staff were unfriendly and didn't even look up to acknowledge us coming or going. There was no coffee or tea in the room, access to the upper floors left a lot to be desired, and it's too far from any real attractions.

There was a guest waiting to check in while we stood there, someone who could have been left outside in the rain with nobody to let him in or check him in. At 5:40 pm on Sunday there were no staff around, and our keys had been programmed wrong and wouldn't open the door. We called a manager and waited 20 minutes. When he arrived, he said the technology problems weren't his fault and acted as if we should be grateful he'd come from across town. Their response doesn't actually apologize for what went wrong, or for how we were treated.

The staff were friendly, and the hotel was clean with modern facilities. Getting into central Cologne was easy, either with a short walk or by public transport.

The stay was good apart from smoke drifting into my room from people smoking on the terrace. It didn't bother me too much, though I can see how it would be a problem for some. There was no AC, so I had to leave the terrace door ajar. Otherwise, it was nice.
