IntercityHotel Darmstadt

It’s handy being right by the train station, and the staff were very nice and professional. There are some shortcomings, though. Breakfast selection isn’t great, and missing items take a long time to be replenished. My room was a bit noisy, which could bother light sleepers. Parking is arranged with a local space behind the building, accessed by a car elevator. Some people might find that setup unique and interesting.

The room was basic but functional, and breakfast was okay. The beds weren’t great. Public transport connections are good, though you can hear trains if your room faces the platform.

I expected decent treatment from hotel staff, even in Germany, but this was the most upsetting incident I could imagine. I was in the ladies’ bathroom when I noticed my phone was about to die, so I sat in a chair to charge it for a few minutes. A huge, very rude, aggressive man in a work uniform that looked like a construction worker’s appeared. He didn’t introduce himself. He just barked at me, asking what I was doing there and whether I was a hotel guest. When I asked who he was to question me in that tone, he got even more aggressive and yelled that he was the building technician and would call the police right then if I didn’t have a room number. I thought he had to be joking. He seemed completely insane. I started laughing because the situation felt so absurd, and encouraged him to go ahead. He then called someone and bluffed that he was already calling the police, even though I had a reservation. It was humiliating and unacceptable. I left after telling reception what had happened and saying I’d cancel all three reservations. I can’t believe they get paid on top of traumatizing their own guests. I can only warn everyone against booking InterCity Hotel Darmstadt!

A decent hotel for travel, with easy public transport access despite being far from the city center. The room isn’t luxurious, but it works for one night. The hairdryer is old, so bring your own.
