Hotel Am Rathaus

The rooms are two to five floors up, and there's no elevator. Wi-Fi only worked off and on for me on the ground floor, so they shouldn't advertise it as available in the rooms. Getting hold of reception was tricky too, as it seemed they were downstairs in the restaurant unless someone asked for them. There was a kettle, but no cups or coffee. The windows had no curtains, just mini-blinds on one and nothing on the other. It's a charming place with simple furnishings and an excellent location. Okay, but know what you're getting into.

For €140 a night, this was extremely disappointing. The fridge was so loud it kept waking me, and the room didn't have the sofa sitting area shown in the ad. There were only paper cups and tiny wooden spoons, so I couldn't even make proper tea. They put us on the fifth floor with no lift, up a very narrow, shaky staircase. Heating barely worked, and at one point there was no hot water. When I needed to get ready for a business meeting in the morning, nobody helped, so I had to take a cold shower in the middle of winter. The reception was mostly closed, staff were hard to reach, and when we tried to drop off luggage, they didn't answer the phone for an hour. I reported the problems, but got a reply five hours later, after more calls and texts went unanswered. They offered free food from the chicken shop downstairs as compensation, but it opened an hour and a half late, so we had no time to get anything. The staff there were rude and said it was my problem they weren't ready. Instead, we ended up with vouchers for breakfast somewhere else, which was equally bad. They took 40 minutes to put a few slices of cheese and ham on our plates because they were busy serving paying customers.

The rooms were really nice, and surprisingly, we didn't hear any annoying noise from outside. It's perfectly placed in the city center for sightseeing and shopping. Definitely recommend it.
