Breakfast at the Benserhof was genuinely wonderful, and we loved looking out over the fields from the children's room and living room. The hotel's location is great too, though the apartments are about a 10-minute walk from the beach. The apartment itself was a big letdown. We booked by email after being told the building was “newly” renovated, so we expected something quite different. It smelled old as soon as we walked in, and the furniture was a mix of old and new. The bathroom was stained and poorly cleaned, the sofa smelled awful, and dog hair was everywhere. Our kids ended up with it on their socks. Some pillows and blankets were filled with down or feathers and didn't feel fresh. The children's room window was taped shut with no handle to open it. No one asked whether everything was all right, so I didn't get a chance to raise these things while we were there. We wouldn't book this apartment again.

Apartment number 5 was clean and basically okay, but there were small cosmetic flaws that hadn't been fixed. The toilet was very cramped, and a quarter roll of toilet paper wasn't enough for four people over two days. For an apartment, we also expected at least some soap in the bathroom. A little attention and a few euros could make the place better, but at this price we wouldn't stay here again. In a way, it was good they didn't ask whether we'd enjoyed our stay.

The pool table sounds like a great extra for a holiday apartment, but you can only use it if it's more than half a meter from the wall. The apartment itself was large, though it had few amenities, and the service was absolutely terrible for what we paid. There are much better apartments in Bensersiel, based on my own experience. There was urine in the toilet when we arrived, and the smell was awful. We were told it might be the yellow toilet cleaner, and naturally no cleaning person could come. The shower also had no hot water. The receptionist was sorry, but a caretaker couldn't come on the weekend.

The apartment we got was nowhere near the one shown on the website. It was farther from the hotel and looked nothing like the pictures. Shabby and misleading, an absolute no-go.
