We booked this as a stopover because we wanted somewhere welcoming to pets and children, but I’d happily stay longer next time. The staff were very friendly and there were great breakfast choices. A small play area with books and toys for children was a lovely surprise. The pool area was lovely too, with a sauna and massage bed. The dog fee of €20 is more than I’ve seen at other hotels, but they provide a good service, including a dog bowl, towels, and extra poo bags if needed, so I can see why they charge it. An extra bed in a standard room costs €35. The base room rate seemed reasonable for the service, so that may be justified too. We were unexpectedly upgraded to a suite because of overbooking, which was a nice surprise. It had doors opening directly onto a little patio. I liked that they use refillable dispensers for basic soap and body wash, while offering free toiletries at the desk if you need them. It’s nice to see a hotel cutting down on waste. The castle and town centre were a short walk away, and it was easy to find food in town. We didn’t try the hotel restaurant this time, though the menu sounded lovely.

A quiet spot in a rural setting in the middle of Ruhrgebiet, but with great connections to cultural sights and city life. The service was fast, friendly, and good. Rooms were nice and unexpectedly quiet. The food was really tasty, the wellness area was clean and well kept, and the pool was big enough to swim in. A great place to switch off from everyday challenges.

We were attending a wedding at this hotel and booked a room there too. The ceremony was at 3pm, so we arrived just after noon, but check-in officially started at 3pm and they charged us an extra 30 EUR for early access. They knew we were wedding guests and still wouldn’t let us check in early for free. At checkout the next day, they added 28 EUR for breakfast and WLAN. Who charges extra for WiFi in 2020? We hadn’t even had breakfast: we woke up at 10am after the party, and breakfast ended at 10am, so we paid for nothing. The receptionist was super rude. She hung up on us when we called before arriving, and did the same to other people on the phone while we were checking in. The room design was terrible, and the pictures on Booking.com and their website had nothing to do with what we saw. When we asked to switch rooms, they claimed the hotel was fully booked. Avoid this hotel if you can!

The way the cleaning lady tucked my three kids’ stuffed animals under their blankets was so sweet. They had a great breakfast too, with eggs made to order, fresh fruit, and ingredients to make your own juice. The staff were courteous and capable, and the food overall was excellent. There’s a lovely pool with loungers and a massage bed, plus cards and chess boards for guests to use. The internet connection was the best I’ve ever had, and the care throughout the hotel was top notch. A really lovely stay, and one of the hotels I’ll keep on my short list.

I’ve been staying at the Mintrops for about 10 years, and it’s been consistently good. The hotel stays up to date, while keeping the engaging atmosphere that welcomed me on my first visit. The surroundings are very pleasant. Rooms are somewhat small, but if that doesn’t bother you, it makes for a very positive hotel experience.
