Landhotel Sonneck

Whenever we’re in the Blackforest, we come back to this restaurant. The German food is great, service is good, and the prices feel fair. I’d definitely recommend it.

The building was lovely, with cute decorations, and the place felt clean, neat, and sweet. It reminded me of nostalgic movies and animies. Breakfast was good, but its timing and the pillows were the two things that brought the stay down for us. Breakfast runs from 8-10 hrs, which may work for families with little children, but not so well for people heading out to hike or explore. With shops closed for the holidays, it’s not easy to skip the hotel breakfast. I’d read on the booking.com profile and in the hotel’s messages that the timing could be adjusted if guests asked, but that didn’t happen for us. We both struggled with the big, loose pillows overnight, and didn’t sleep comfortably.

Apartment 4.3 was clean and comfortable, though it’s in a separate building from the main hotel and reception, which was a little inconvenient. The checkout left a bad impression. I gave my key to a cleaner, who said I could leave, then later got an email saying the hotel would charge me another 5% of the total stay because I hadn’t checked out at reception. No one had told me I needed to go to reception, and the cleaner’s instructions made me think I’d completed checkout correctly. I found the extra charge unfair and disappointing, especially since I’d followed what a staff member told me. The accommodation itself was satisfactory, but clearer checkout instructions would have avoided this. I hope the hotel addresses it for future guests.

The staff were lovely, and they’d thoughtfully set out a blanket, bowls, and a snack for our dogs. We also appreciated the breakfast buffet’s little glass bottles and bowls, which helped limit plastic. The restaurant and breakfast were really good, and the location is ideal for exploring the Hochschwarzwald. It’s a sweet little hotel with a distinctive blend of folklore kitsch and modern, pared-back style.
