Gasthaus Schiff

There were five of us with a reservation, and the restaurant was quite busy on Saturday evening. We were seated in the blue section, where it wasn’t warm and the two other groups made things rather noisy. The menu was much reduced, with just one option, schnitzel and fries for around €20. We ordered it and were very happy with the food. The service was a different story: the server didn’t ask if everything was all right or otherwise check on us.

We ate here and stayed overnight. The food was really good: mixed platters to start, then steak, which was delicious. Our room had charming furnishings and a little treat waiting for us that night. The service was friendly and helpful.

The tram connection is very good, about a seven-minute walk away, and the staff were helpful. The bathroom was okay, but there was brownish residue on the toilet paper holder from previous guests, which wasn’t appetizing. The room was too small and had no air conditioning. We were there at the start of July during very hot weather, and had to keep the window open all night because it was too noisy, so we barely slept. Breakfast wasn’t worth the room price. There are better, cheaper hotels in Freiburg that offer more. I can’t recommend this place.

We stayed in room 103 and felt comfortable there, and I’d definitely come back. The buffet was ample and varied: two kinds of rolls, croissants, bread, baguette, cheese, cold cuts, boiled and fried eggs, with or without bacon, muesli, fruit, vegetarian spread, butter, sweet spread, jam, honey, Nutella, and yogurt. Drinks included two juices, water, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. I also thought it was kind of them to toast a guest’s own bread without hesitation when he asked because of an intolerance. Staff were friendly, attentive, and competent, and booking online was quick and easy. The hotel itself is a bit dated, though the renovated rooms feel modern, and I liked the mix of classic and modern styles. A few things could use more attention: cobwebs should be cleared, and the bathroom needs dusting even if the hairdryer hasn’t been used. The tiled backsplash under the mirror catches dust, and there should be somewhere to put a toothbrush or toiletry bag.
