Courtyard by Marriott Munich Garching

It’s in a multipurpose building on campus, and it didn’t feel very personal as a hotel. The room was okay, but the bathroom design was impractical: the toilet and basin are actually in the shower, and the basin is turned 90 degrees from the useful position. See picture.

The room was clean, quiet, and had no smell. The rest of the stay was frustrating. Reception staff were unfriendly to guests and to other employees. The bathroom setup leaves the floor soaked when you shower, and the sink tap was like an uncontrollable water gun. I booked in a rush for the wrong month on a non-flexible rate, so I had to book another stay. I understand the terms allowed the hotel to charge the full rate for cancelling the incorrect dates, but I’d already paid for a second stay that cost more than the mistaken booking. I expected some understanding. The only response to my request was “Request declined.” I’m not impressed.

Breakfast was the real bright spot, with good variety and quality. The hotel is modern and attractive, and the train station is right outside. The location works well for the convention centre or nearby universities, but there isn’t much else around and it’s quite far from central Munich. The room was small and uncomfortable, with poor sound insulation. I could hear conversations and other noise from neighboring rooms, making it hard to rest. The bathroom was a letdown too: no shower enclosure, a handheld shower that wouldn’t stay in its holder, an almost completely clogged overhead shower, and a loose drain. At reception, staff were inattentive and unhelpful, well below what I’d expect from a hotel of this category. That needs serious improvement.

Breakfast was astonishing, and the service and food were amazing during my stay from the 24th to the 26th February. Monica from Sardinia, the receptionist we always saw in the mornings, is much more than a pretty face. It was a pleasure being welcomed by her. Best regards from Portugal!
