The old Bavarian style made this hotel feel very different from the usual downtown stay, and I loved it. My room was large, well equipped, pleasant, and good value. Breakfast was the classic German spread, with so many dishes it was almost dinner. The staff were great, and the place had a lovely, harmonious feel. Parking is right in front. I was visiting business partners in Downtown Munich and went to see FC Bayern München play. Getting around was easy: the Autobahn is nearby, and it’s a three-minute walk to the Metro, about 30 minutes into town and 10 minutes to the stadium. I’m German and travel around Europe a lot, and staying here also gave me a sense of everyday life in Bavaria. I was too busy to take pictures. 4.7 out of 5 stars!

The hotel was very clean, and I heard the breakfast was amazing, which is why I’d give it two stars instead of one. I had to leave before reception came back in the morning, though. With nobody at the desk and no drop box or instructions, I left the key in my room. That turned out fine. The place has charm, but it’s very old and seems unwilling to update. The rooms look nice at first, then the cheap furniture and uncomfortable beds become obvious. Mine felt like a cheap rollaway, and I slept terribly. There’s no AC, so the room got hot and stuffy. Opening the window meant inviting in mosquitoes, since there are no screens. The internet kept cutting out all night, and the TV is very old too. Reception isn’t open 24 hours. Returning after 11 can be confusing: use your room key at the entrance on the right side. The front door sign says to go to the back, but it’s the side, which might save you some wandering. Bring water, too. The vending machines are old and take coins only, and there aren’t any shops or 24-hour gas stations nearby after hours. I missed breakfast because I left early. It’s a shame, especially with the town so close to an airport. Aside from the cleanliness, I really wouldn’t recommend staying here.

I won’t stay here again. On my final morning, at 10:15, two people knocked, then opened my door before I could answer. They didn’t apologize, which was very rude. Checkout is at 10:30, which I couldn’t believe. I was here for a conference for a few nights. The room wasn’t clean: there was a dead bug on the bed on my first day, and the shower gel dispenser was almost empty. After two days I told an older woman on staff, and she was helpful and refilled it.

Breakfast was wonderful, though very European in style, and there are several good restaurants nearby, including a Greek place right across the way. The station is only a few minutes on foot, and LRZ (Leibniz Research Center) is about a 20-minute walk. That’s where my meeting was held. I’ve stayed at Hotel Hoyacker Hof twice for work, in 2011 and 2017. Both rooms were clean, practical, and well furnished, with a comfortable bed and a large closet. This time my room faced a courtyard and nearby apartments, so it was fun to watch the activity outside. My one issue was the heat. There’s no air conditioning, as is common in northern Europe, and it got very hot during the day. With the window open, outside lights and noise made sleeping difficult. I may have to start bringing a small fan, since I’m running into this more often.

The staff were friendly and helpful, and even with only very basic German I had no trouble speaking English with everyone I met. I was here for nearly a week for a conference and was really happy with the stay. The rooms are roomy compared with many places I’ve stayed in Europe, and they’re comfortable and quite pretty, with lots of wood. Some room rates include a very good breakfast. I’ll stay here again when I’m back in Garching.
