Hotel Garni Jägerhof

We found it easy to get around, with the train and Zugspitze rail each a five to seven minute walk away, and plenty of parking for our large car. The owners and staff were among the nicest people we've met in Bavaria, and the service was some of the best we've had at a hotel. It had a cozy, accommodating bed and breakfast feel. Breakfast was delicious, and the hostess made eggs to order each morning. Beers, soft drinks, and coffee were available throughout the day and night. There was also a beautiful wellness center with three saunas, though we didn't have time to use it. Great place for snowboarding and skiing, and we'll be back for our next snowboarding trip.

The quiet spot is only 50 m from the main street, and we had the best views of Zugspitze from every room. Restaurants, cafés, a grocery store, hair stylist, and ice cream café are all within walking distance. It's 15 mi utes to Eibsee and Garmisch Partenkirchen, with German and Austrian Zugspitzbahn nearby, so if one is closed for maintenance, the other is running. Our room was very clean, and the staff were friendly and helpful, just like family.

The hotel is old, but I've stayed here four times over the past few years, and my rooms have always been super clean and comfortable. The owners are friendly and professional. I don't speak German, but communication has never been a problem. I think it's great value for money.

Grainau is a pretty, calm little village with a quaint feel, though not much is open after 6 pm. There's no shortage of restaurants, but vegetarian choices are limited, with probably more options in Garmisch. A car gives you much more flexibility. Without one, Garmisch to Grainau can cost nearly 20 euros, and there's no local taxi in Grainau, so a cab back to Garmisch can be 35-40 euros. The DB station is 1.5 km away, while the bus stop and cog wheel station are only a 5-6 minute walk away. Service was great, everyone was polite and helpful, and the rooms were clean and comfortable. The host leaves cakes and breads for guests every evening. We got a Travel card when we arrived that covered the cog wheel train and bus between eibsee, grainau, and garmisch, but not DB trains. Buses and trains connect to Garmisch, though they only run every hour, and the bus takes nearly 35 min. Expect 5-10 min delays, so don't schedule a transfer with less than half an hour to spare. Wifi was inconsistent, and we had none at all one night. Breakfast was average.
