Mercure Hotel Hamburg Am Volkspark

I booked because it was near my meetings, then found the public transport links and Volkspark were useful too. The neighborhood is quiet at night, which made it easier to relax after a long day. I’ll stay here again.

The staff made my birthday stay at Mercure am Volkspark unforgettable. I’d mentioned when booking that my friend and I were coming for my birthday and our favorite band’s show at Barclays Arena. On the second day, two young women from the team knocked on our door with a cake and a really sweet handwritten note. We were both genuinely moved, and it made the day extra special. Many thanks to them! The arena was also conveniently close, around a 10 to 15min drive depending on traffic, or about a 30ish min walk. There’s a nearby bus stop with several routes to the city center and train station. Our room was clean and comfortable, though the room and bathroom doors were a little hard to shut and the TV remote didn’t work properly.

A main reason to stay here is a visit to DESY. But the hotel is showing its age, at 30 years+ by the look of it. The sink in my room barely drained, and the staff didn’t manage to fix it during the rest of my one-day stay.

Breakfast was good, with a decent range of hot and cold options, including smoked salmon. I would have liked a wider choice of fruit, based on other places I’ve stayed. The room was clean and a decent size, with a good sized bed, though only two thin pillows. There was an empty tube that might have been moisturiser on top of the wardrobe. Also, the hotel seems short on ironing boards for its size. I had to iron my suit on a towel on the desk, which wasn’t ideal before business meetings. Probably the most dated Mercure I’ve stayed in so far.
