The location and views were great, but the service and room quality need work, especially staff training and recognition for loyal Bonvoy guests. We booked three rooms at The Westin Hamburg, and it didn’t feel up to the standard I expect from a Marriott property. The rooms were okay, though the Elbphilharmonie Studio I stayed in felt less premium than expected in its design and overall feel. The view was the best part. At check-in, we handed over our passports and I asked about an upgrade as a loyal Bonvoy member. The staff said upgrades were only available for an extra charge, with no recognition of that loyalty. We also had problems with reception at both check-in and check-out. Some staff seemed inexperienced, and there were long waits and confusion. At checkout, they charged us for parking even though we’d been told at check-in it would be validated for free. They insisted we pay just to stamp the ticket, which was frustrating and inconsistent.

It used to be a much better hotel, but the standards seem to have slipped. The rooms are well designed and have good views, though access could be better. They’re starting to feel dated, with lots of carpet stains and wear on the furniture and walls. There seems to be a wait for everything, from check-in and breakfast to getting into the bar or using the lift. Staff don’t show much flexibility or a humane approach anymore. Some seem to have developed a superiority complex based on how the hotel used to be, and gotten too comfortable. A light refurbishment would help, along with customer service training and a return to the hotel’s original values. It falls far below Marriot standards now and is turning into more of a tourist trap. To me, it’s on par with places like Best Western, Ibis, or Holiday Inn.

I’d read quite a few not so positive reviews beforehand, so I was a bit skeptical going in. I ended up truly impressed: excellent rooms, a fantastic harbor view, a great spa, and service from the staff that was really top level. I’d happily come back anytime!

Breakfast was an absolutely excellent start to the day, with a great range of fresh, high-quality options and amazing service. A special thank you to Mr. Yerokhin and Ms. Lischne for making me feel so welcome throughout my stay. They were exceptionally professional and attentive, and their hospitality really lifted the whole experience. The room was beautifully designed, with a stunning view over the city and harbor.

At night, the city lights soften into silver, while cargo ships move along the Elbe by day. From the bed, you can see HafenCity, Speicherstadt, and the river far below. The floor-to-ceiling windows catch the shifting light across the harbor, echoing the curve of sails and the shimmer of water. Staying in the Elbphilharmonie Suite at The Westin Hamburg feels like being between sky and sea. Set high in the glass crest of the Elbphilharmonie, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the suite follows the building’s curves and reflections. Sand, grey, and sea blue inside create a quiet feeling, as if the room were breathing with the tide. The luxury here doesn’t dazzle, it’s the tranquility shaped by the architecture. You can read, bathe, or simply look out until time seems to dissolve into light.
