Hotel B54 Heidelberg

The room badly needed a thorough cleaning. The bathroom drain smelled, there was mold in the shower, including on the rubber between the glass doors, and the toilet was filthy. I also found dust and someone else’s hair, possibly pubic hair, beside the bathroom mirror.

The room was clean, the bed really comfortable, and the shower had great pressure. I also appreciated having English channels on the TV. I was a little uneasy about staying somewhere with self check-in for the first time, but the staff kindly walked me through the security measures. They were lovely and helpful. A cute, charming place that I’d recommend to travelers.

We didn’t feel especially welcome, and the stay left no lasting impression. It’s a very functional setup, mostly self check-in, with no other amenities. The booking details didn’t make it clear that we’d get narrow single beds, apparently around 80 cm wide, in separate rooms. One room shared space with the kitchenette, and the other had no door. We also couldn’t work out how to open the windows, despite the notes about their electric operation. The furniture was very cheap, Ikea at best, and some of it was worn, as were the walls and fittings. It was clean enough, but nothing special. Overall, not a comfortable place to stay.

The apartment was spacious and comfortable for the three of us, and it was clean too. We stayed in #43. There’s a lift, though you still have to manage a few stairs to get inside. We couldn’t check in early, but there’s a luggage room out back, down some stairs in a cellar. Check-in itself is self-service at the door, with a receptionist there in the afternoon once you’re inside. A couple of good places to eat are close by, including Da Baggio, about 50 metres away and delicious. The large supermarket around the corner is a six-minute walk, and the tram is just one or two minutes away, with service to the station, old town, and castle. It’s about 800 metres, all flat, to the station and ten minutes to old town. The castle takes 30 to 40 minutes. There’s a fridge, coffee maker, and small grill, but no oven or microwave. The metal bathroom sink plug was stuck shut, though that was the only real issue. I’d stay here again if I come back to Heidelberg. :0)
