The restaurant food is supposedly Thai, but it was as bland as German food. Still, it made a change from Brawurst, Schnitzel and Co. Breakfast was disappointing too. Their coffee was the sort of weak, murky stuff that splutters out of a big thermos when you press the lid, and tasted like it had been sitting there for hours. They don't even provide a fan on hot days, so the room gets impossible to spend time in. It's hard to judge the place fairly because, like all accommodation on Helgoland, it's wildly overpriced. At half the price it would be okay. I wouldn't stay overnight on Helgoland. Go early, walk around the island, take a ferry to Düne, walk around there, then leave. That's all the time you need.

We had two rooms for two adults and two children. The smaller one was still perfectly fine, while the other was larger and much newer. Breakfast was wonderful, and the service was too.

We were really looking forward to a birthday trip to Heligoland, but the ferry was canceled the day before. We asked for a partial refund through Booking.com and were turned down, with the explanation that the ferry also leaves from Cuxhaven. I found that response unprofessional. The website didn't give us the cancellation option we usually choose, the option to cancel the stay if needed. I've never run into that elsewhere. It leaves you feeling as if your money has just been taken. If the hotel is so short of money that it has to use such unethical practices, it should say so openly so guests know they're basically making a donation. Since I never stayed, I can't comment on the hotel itself.

The hotel is centrally placed in the lower part of the island, just a few steps from the island reception. Rooms are small, but space is limited on Heligoland. The furnishings are good, there's plenty of wardrobe space for clothes and other things, and having a refrigerator is a real plus, especially in summer. Breakfast is very good, with something for everyone, and the fully automatic coffee machine is a nice addition.
