ALCATRAZ Hotel am Japanischen Garten

We held an event here, and the staff were kind and did their best to help, even though they weren’t prepared for 70 people to come drink. The catered food was pretty basic, but not bad. As for the rooms, the cheap option is intentionally bare bones: you sleep in a jail cell with a bunk, toilet, and sink. The comfort rooms are more like regular rooms, though still made a bit rough around the edges for the theme. It’s a cool hotel concept, and I thought it worked.

The hotel grounds have easy free parking, and it’s only a short walk to the city center. My room had its own shower and, while small because this is an old prison, it was quite adequate. They’ve kept the prison feel really well, with bars on the windows and reception, plus barbed wire still on the outer walls. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful.

We had a Christmas party here, and the hotel staff were great, providing everything we needed, even a lactation room. The place still feels very much like a prison, but it’s nice too. I booked a double comfort room, which was just big enough for me and my 13-year-old daughter.

The staff were friendly and very helpful, and I’d stay here again. It’s reasonably priced, and the old prison setting adds to the atmosphere. You can even sleep in a cell, which I thought was cute. Breakfast was okay, nothing special.
