I loved the old-fashioned feel of the place and the quiet forest around it, but I definitely wouldn’t stay there again. It would be better to hike during the day and head back to town at night than deal with that kind of unwelcoming behavior. Getting in and out, and communicating with the hosts, made it impossible to have the peaceful, comfortable stay I wanted. I had told the owners I’d be checking in late because I was traveling from far away and had several delayed train changes. They still left, saying they couldn’t wait, even though they live on the ground floor of the same building. They didn’t leave the keys with a note or answer my calls on the way. I arrived hoping to check in, but ended up returning to Konstanz around 9.40 pm to find another place. The location made it difficult to get back to town at that hour, and I had to pay for two taxis and an extra night’s accommodation. Check-out was nearly as bad: the garden gate was locked, trapping me inside, and I had to call and wait for one of the owners to come open it. When I raised these problems, the owners acted as if they couldn’t understand, though they communicated perfectly well in English about other things. For example, when I asked for only potato salad, they tried to make me buy the last chicken serving alongside it, saying the kitchen was closed. If the kitchen was closed, how could they serve chicken and potato salad but not just the salad? To me, that suggested bad intentions, or at least poor hospitality. The lady even told me they weren’t a hotel and couldn’t wait for check-in, although they’ve apparently been on Booking for years. It shouldn’t be hard to put a key locker outside the garden gate so guests can enter after a long walk through the forest or leave when nobody is around at check-out. The owners have a lovely cat, but it apparently doesn’t get regular parasite vaccines. It had many ticks and wandered on the tables. I adore cats, but this is a place where people eat and stay, and they should be careful about regular treatment for internal and external parasites. In my opinion, the place shouldn’t be operating as either accommodation or a restaurant.
